Panagiotis Kourtesis, PhD
Bioinformatics

Panagiotis joined Regulon in September of 2006. He brings his prior expertise in computer programming, use of commercial software, microarray experimental design and analysis, and database management in the creation and development of BIoCORe (Biomedical Informatics for Clinical Oncology at Regulon). BIoCORe is a facility developing an infrastructure for clinical trials integration into a clinical data management system (e-CDM) as well as several in-house applications (databases and software) for our ongoing research. Panagiotis is also the managing Editor of Gene Therapy and Molecular Biology as well as Cancer Therapy, both journals published by Gene Therapy Press.

Prior to joining the team, Panagiotis pursued a post-doctoral IRTA fellowship at the Bioinformatics Core Facility at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, USA. He collaborated in microarray experimental design of clinical studies addressing issues varying from cancer to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, assisted in the implementation of the first world-wide High-Throughput Microarray System (RoboChip) using Affymetrix microarrays, as well as designed and developed a viral microarray chip (VirChip) in conjunction with Affymetrix. During the latter part of his doctoral work and the earlier part of his post-doc fellowship, Panagiotis worked concurrently as a Senior Protein Scientist for the Protein Information Resource (PIR) at the National Biomedical Research Foundation, which is part of the Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Panagiotis graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, USA. His scientific training includes a M.Sc. in polymer and inorganic chemistry from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. in computational biochemistry from the American University in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with the Laboratory of Biophysical Chemistry and Computational Biophysics, NHLBI at NIH. Panagiotis is fluent in English and French and author of publications in scientific, peer- reviewed, journals.
